Joaquín Sorolla (1863-1923), one of the greatest names in 20th-century Spanish painting, is honored at the Hôtel de Caumont in 2020. He is responsible for one of the most striking and brilliant representations of a luminous, Mediterranean, optimistic, and modern Spain. Based on naturalism, under the influence of Bastien-Page, his painting is very marked by the constant reference to Velázquez, whom Sorolla considers his great master. This apprenticeship is enriched by a free and luminous brushstroke, close to Impressionism, and by an incredibly vitalist and innovative interpretation of light and color. His masterful compositions, informed by the new framing possibilities of photography, as well as by the influence of Japanese prints, captivate us with their spontaneity, immediacy, and modernity. The exhibition at the Hôtel de Caumont draws on several research projects to address the way in which Sorolla constructed his work, focusing on three fundamental questions: the artist's creative process, the sources of the main subjects in his work, and the evolution of these subjects within his production. Alongside ambitious large-scale works, small oil drawings and sketches are exhibited, shedding new light on his conception of art, the main feature of which is luminosity and spontaneity. Essential to his work process, these small-scale sketches allow him to define the subjects he explores and to test compositions or color combinations. The exhibition is also an opportunity to highlight, through the artist's photographs and abundant correspondence, the tireless, almost obsessive nature of his work, and allows for an analysis of the way in which Sorolla developed his most personal style.
