Following an exceptional donation of more than 300 drawings to the Cité de l'architecture & du patrimoine in 2019, thanks to the generosity of Bernard Tschumi, the exhibition retraces the career of Jean Tschumi, one of the most complete Swiss architects and teachers of the 20th century. From his beginnings as a decorator to the competition for the headquarters of the World Health Organization, we discover an architecture conceived as a total art, at the crossroads of the decorative lessons of the 1930s, the modern legacy of Perret and the American models of functionality and comfort of the 1950s.

The catalogue also opens its pages to contributions from specialists, both French and Swiss, in all fields where Jean Tschumi demonstrated his international stature: history of architecture, urban planning, decorative arts, construction and heritage; and which today make his work the challenge of a revelation to the general public.

The richness, the requirement and the seriousness of the content, both iconographic and textual, allows this monographic work to be considered as a complete unpublished documentation on this architect.

Through the exhibition and its catalogue, the challenge is to produce a strong visual impact that contributes to the rehabilitation of this modern architecture of the second half of the 20th century, which is still largely unknown. The elegance of the drawings, plans, and the plastic power of Tschumi's architecture largely bears comparison with that of the French, European and American leaders of the time, and makes it possible to meet this challenge.
