This beautiful book aims to bring together for the first time the entire religiously inspired production of Jean Touret (1916-2004). A sculptor, but also a painter and furniture designer, he was swept away from his first commissions in the excitement that accompanied the post-war construction of new places of worship, from emblematic chapels like that of Tignes to the creation of the modern altar of Notre-Dame de Paris. Alongside his commissioned works, Jean Touret sculpted Christs and prophets throughout his life, a theme inspired by his readings of the Old Testament and which he particularly loved. He filled his house with these tall figures of praying people with a strong presence, witnesses to his own aspiration to a life without artifice. This statuary, fully illustrated in this book, justifies the chosen title: Sacred Art - Prophetic Art. Among the many testimonies that inform this book, we will remember that of the Archbishop of Paris, Jean-Marie Lustiger, with whom the sculptor collaborated for forty years, in the ardent search for a sacred art where the figurative, the visible, evokes and signifies, without imposing an image. This common quest is reflected in the moving correspondence, shrouded in friendly respect and shared faith, which accompanies the genesis of their creations in the service of the liturgy.
