This book introduces us to the world of Jean Paul Gaultier. Beyond his technical virtuosity, unbridled imagination, and memorable artistic collaborations, the work of Jean Paul Gaultier (born in 1952) offers an open vision of society, a world of madness, sensitivity, humor, and impertinence. Jean Paul Gaultier, a militant iconoclast, systematically challenges clichés, norms, codes, conventions, and traditions, which he diverts, shifts, inverts, and destroys in order to better reinvent them. He joyfully draws from the urban jungle, new materials, the performing arts, and all animated screens. His hypermnesic artist's eye divines this "beauty that runs faster than us," to use Picasso's words. He imposes a postmodern vision, borrowing from a multitude of references, reconciling opposing universes. Along the exhibition's itinerary, focuses on embroidery, accessories, lace, hats, prints, feathers, leathers, and stage costumes will highlight the dazzling expertise of the couture professions. The exhibition presents the designer's previously unseen pieces (haute couture and ready-to-wear), created between 1970 and 2013. They are accompanied by sketches, archives, stage costumes, and excerpts from films, fashion shows, concerts, music videos, dance performances, and television programs. The exhibition also benefits from the talent of many renowned artists and experts, including the avant-garde Montreal theater company UBU, directed by Denis Marleau and Stéphanie Jasmin, who animated the mannequins using an innovative technological process.
