The magnificent Jean Dubuffet retrospective presented at the Pierre Gianadda Foundation, in collaboration with the Centre Georges-Pompidou in Paris, offers a reinterpretation of the work of the great defender of "Art Brut." Although he paradoxically rejected the dominant culture, the schools, trends, and techniques taught, his work occupies a major place in the artistic landscape of the second half of the 20th century.
Through its diversity, this exhibition bears witness to the inexhaustible creativity of this prolific artist - born in 1901 and died in 1985 - who knew how to evolve his style throughout his life. Elevating ignorance as a principle to create a singular body of work, punctuated by successive series, Jean Dubuffet never ceased to develop new research with bold, always disconcerting "tones." Unsubmissive to current norms, "true art," according to him, "is always where we least expect it. Where no one thinks of it or speaks its name." Rich in more than ten thousand works listed in the catalogue raisonné, Jean Dubuffet's polymorphous work spans six decades of the 20th century. Also, to reflect all aspects of his creation, the exhibition presented at the Pierre Gianadda Foundation is structured around highlights, alternating masterpieces of his painting and major collections of works on paper (drawings and gouaches), presented in chronological order.
