Catalogue of the exhibition presented at the Maison Jean Cocteau, Milly-la-Forêt, June 1 to October 27, 2019. Coming from the estate of Edouard Dermit, last companion and heir of Jean Cocteau (1889-1963), no fewer than 282 works by the latter or by artists close to him have just joined the collections of the Centre Pompidou. They constitute the studio collection of Jean Cocteau and are, for some, presented for the first time at the reopening of the Cocteau house in Milly-la-Forêt (Essonne). Presenting the major elements of this exceptional corpus, the catalog brings together 150 drawings and highlights the genesis of Cocteau's linear and modern style in the 1920s: early youthful sketches, portraits, illustrations for magazines and novels, sketches related to the world of entertainment, numerous self-portraits, portraits of his close friends such as André Salmon, Coco Chanel, Paul Éluard, Christian Bérard and Colette. They are completed with portraits of Cocteau drawn or painted by Marie Laurencin, Modigliani, Picasso, Man Ray, Irving Penn, Lipchitz, Buffet...
