In the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD, pottery workshops located in the middle Rhône valley produced terracotta vases remarkable for their decorations. These are molded medallions, which, through the diversity of subjects and iconographic quality, stand out clearly from the productions of this period. This work is an extension of the exhibition Images of Clay, Images of Paper, presented in 2004 at the Saint-Romain-en-Gal museum. The medallion vases constitute a precious testimony to the art of the Roman provinces. They show that far from Rome, the Gauls had a profound knowledge of mythology, of which they represented episodes rarely mentioned in the texts. Through these clay images, the reader will discover the unsuspected richness of a popular culture.
