- Hokusai's Manga, begun in 1814 by the artist, is a set of 15 volumes bringing together more than a thousand drawings illustrating daily life, fauna, flora, landscapes, and all facets of the Japanese imagination linked to the supernatural. Printed on wood in three colors, black, gray, and flesh color, these volumes of drawings constitute a veritable encyclopedia of the Japanese world at the beginning of the 19th century but at the same time reflect an often humorous or fanciful look characteristic of Hokusai's genius unsurpassed by the vivacity and acuity of his line.
For the first time, all of these drawings are reproduced identically to the original edition and commented on plate by plate by Hokusai specialist Matthi Forrer, from an anthropological, artistic and cultural perspective. Until now, this collection was known only through a selection of drawings, most often reproduced in a single tone, unlike the original edition, and above all without commentary identifying the exact subject of each plate. This facsimile publication in two volumes of 450 pages each, also includes the last three volumes published posthumously, whose authenticity is debated. Hokusai exhibition at the Galeries Nationales du Grand Palais from October 1, 2014 to January 18, 2015.
