Across centuries and territories, people have always told stories. Sometimes to explain the world, sometimes to escape from it, these tales, whether fantastic, romantic, or dramatic, permeate the Western imagination and resonate across lands and eras. What stories does humanity tell itself from generation to generation? These narratives are often stories involving strong feelings, such as love, anger, or sadness; the celebration of historical events; or the translation of catastrophic events, whether natural in origin or caused by humanity itself. Through a thematic journey, spanning several centuries of artistic creation, the exhibition aims to offer visitors a journey through these great narratives to better explore their motives and purposes, and to discover the artifices deployed by artists over the centuries to tell stories. An invitation to discover (or rediscover) these episodes, but also the departmental collections and several masterpieces of the Dunkirk institution... The tour is based on a thematic approach to history painting, creating visual and conceptual dialogues between episodes inspired by mythology, the traditions of the Old and New Testaments, or even more or less major historical events and figures. The paintings on display allow us to create links between different periods, from 16th-century Flemish painting to the modern creations of the first half of the 20th century, thus illustrating the permanence of stories in the imagination of Western artists over the centuries.
