Designed to fulfill a function, even if it is symbolic, the object created by man is in fact the fruit, in addition to the ingenuity of its designer, of the legacies left by predecessors and of the socio-political-economic and technical-scientific context of the time that saw its birth. It therefore seemed necessary, for the present work, knowing that the objects chosen as witnesses are presented in a practically chronological order, to link each one to the previous one by a text describing the historical conditions of its creation. It is the great originality of this work, compared to traditional monographs or general works on the subject invariably in the form of a dictionary, to present for the first time, systematically, the socio-cultural context in which these objects of everyday life were born. As such, this synthetic work constitutes the culmination of a lifetime of study and meetings devoted by Raymond Guidot to designers both at the Centre de Création Industrielle, the Centre Pompidou and in teaching.
