The History of the Sons of Louis the Pious provides an exceptional, subjective but very well-informed account (by a member of Charles the Bald's entourage) of the view that a great layman could have of the reign of Louis the Pious (814-840) and of the dissensions between his sons, which led to the partition of Verdun (843), thus calling into question the unity of the Carolingian Empire and setting the framework for the political geography of Europe. In addition to the transcription in this account of the Oaths of Strasbourg, a testimony of primary importance on vernacular languages, this History is remarkable in that it is the work of a layman, and not of a cleric.
