This series of Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, published in 1853 by Hiroshige (1797-1858) in horizontal format, is reproduced here in facsimile for the first time in the West; it echoes, twenty years later, the famous eponymous series by Hokusai. Among natural sites, Mount Fuji, a sacred volcano, has become a symbol of Japan. Symbol of eternity, the highest point in Japan, omnipresent in the archipelago, a source of inspiration for artists, it is the object of a veritable cult and popular legends; Mount Fuji appears in the background of each of the views in this series, from varied viewpoints and changing lights, dominating sites of sublime beauty, often animated by a few characters living in symbiosis with nature.
