The book explores the medieval imagination through its two major components: heroes, such as Charlemagne, the Cid, King Arthur, Roland, Pope Joan, Robin Hood, not forgetting the fairy Melusine and the enchanter Merlin, but also the fox and the unicorn; and, marvels, three buildings or powers that dominate society, namely the cathedral, the Fun castle and the cloister. Medieval iconography ignores the boundaries between the natural and the supernatural, the here and the hereafter, and covers a wide geographical area. This history of the imagination is also a history in the longue durée, presenting these heroes and marvels as the Middle Ages built them, venerated them, then bequeathed to future centuries where they continue to live, notably thanks to new historical media such as cinema and comics.
