Henry de Groux was born in Brussels in 1866 and died in Marseille in 1930. The son of the realist painter Charles Degroux, Henry was devastated by his father's premature death and benefited from the protection of his elder brother, Félicien Rops. A draftsman, painter, sculptor, illustrator, and writer, he worked alongside Degouve de Nuncques, Ensor, Bloy, Mallarmé, Zola, and many others.

Known for causing a scandal at an exhibition of the avant-garde group Les XX in Brussels because his works were displayed alongside those of a certain Vincent Van Gogh, Henry de Groux lived in the unshakeable certainty of one day being considered a great artist.

Inspired by the masters of ancient painting and the classics of literature, an admirer of illustrious men such as Napoleon, Baudelaire, Dante and Wagner, Henry de Groux is undeniably the "painter of excess", both in his work and in his personality.

This first monograph is devoted to the symbolist years (1880-1914) of this exceptional artist.
