In 2023, Anne Rearick spent several weeks in Auvergne, among its inhabitants, their animals, and their landscapes. Her photography describes the daily experience of the worlds in which she immerses herself and which she delicately celebrates. "Devoid of any all-encompassing project, she allows each person to express themselves in turn with looks, postures, gestures, movement, and she reconnects precisely with this profoundly humanist photography that never looks at its navel, that does not seek its ego or its identity but goes to meet the other, its equal" (Christian Caujolle).
Whether in the United States, South Africa, the Basque Country, Sète, Le Perche or Auvergne, she brings this same generous gaze to people to capture images that seek, above all, to express the pleasure of the moment and the quality of the encounter. Working on long-term subjects, Anne Rearick is part of the great documentary photography tradition, focusing mainly on everyday life and rural life.
Seeking a form of timelessness, she magnifies the banal by focusing on nature and the environment of the people she meets, while erasing the signs that distract viewers from the authenticity of her narration. She most often immerses herself in places with a strong identity, exploring the notion of community, central to her work. Clermont-Ferrand Massif Central 2028, which is supporting the city and region's candidacy for the title of European Capital of Culture 2028, is initiating a new series of photographic books called Traversée.
This collection invites artists to explore, experience, and observe the Massif Central, while meeting the men and women who bring this territory to life. Following in the footsteps of legendary routes that cross the Massif Central, such as Stevenson's Way or the Way of St. James, Traversée encourages artists to chart their own course. These new paths also map emotions, revealing what usually remains invisible and inviting new adventures to renew our vision of the vast and diverse landscape that is the Massif Central.
