Better than Andy Warhol's Pop Art, there is the rural Pop Art of Hangar't, a collective born near Pont-Aven which plays with the memory of a Breton village and creates offbeat, internationally famous paintings.
The idea behind the "Hangar't"? To combine the most contemporary art with the memory of a small rural town, Nizon.
It must be said that he belongs to the famous commune of Pont-Aven, home of painters. Since the 1990s, every Sunday, people bring their photos and family albums to the Hangar't studio. Then, together, they create pop, colorful, and offbeat paintings, in the style of Andy Warhol's Pop Art.
Initially a handful, today there are nearly a hundred who have produced at least one painting. Without ever selling them, and maintaining the good-natured spirit of the beginnings. Yet, there is no shortage of success for these new works, and major exhibitions follow one after the other, all over Brittany, France and even in Ireland, Poland and New York!
The Hangar't press book is impressive in this respect: Japanese and German TV, the New York Times, Le Monde... A strange artistic epic of both graphic and social interest.
To celebrate the 3 decades of this unusual avant-garde in the countryside: an exhibition in Pont-Aven in the summer of 2021 and a book sparkling with mischief and color!
