Gustave Doré (1832-1883) was the last of the Romantics, in terms of the spirit and abundance of his work. While he was famous in his time for his illustrative drawings, which enjoyed considerable distribution and influence, his painting only found recognition in England and the United States. It was therefore time to reevaluate his work in France. Indeed, Gustave Doré himself confessed in 1873: "I illustrate today to pay for my paints and brushes. My heart has always been in painting. I have the feeling of having been born a painter."
