In 1933, Alberto Giacometti wrote to André Breton: "Yesterday I read Sade, who fascinates me greatly." In the 1930s, Giacometti created objects with a symbolic function, imbued with the imagination of a violent eroticism similar to that of the writings of DAF de Sade. The era was one of the rehabilitation of the divine Marquis, a model of freedom and modernity for artists and writers. The libertine philosopher fascinated Giacometti and his friends, including Georges Bataille, André Masson, Luis Bunuel, Salvador Dali... This work evokes for the first time the influence of Sade's writings in Giacometti's surrealist work and in his own texts. It brings together most of the surrealist works that Giacometti produced between 1929 and 1934, photographs of lost works, and numerous unpublished notebooks.
