Official exhibition catalog Germaine Richier, La Magicienne at the Picasso Museum in Antibes, from October 6, 2019 to January 26, 2020, then at the Beelden aan Zee Museum in The Hague from March 2020. Since the Germaine Richier retrospective held at the Fondation Maeght in 1996, no other exhibition in France has been devoted to this great sculptor. The exhibition aims to offer a new interpretation of her creation and to highlight her engraved and drawn work - a lesser-known aspect of the artist's work - in its relationship with sculpture. More than 80 works on paper, drawings and engravings by this artist as well as a collection of sculptures will be exhibited, in collaboration with the artist's family. Germaine Richier (1902-1959) studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Montpellier, in the studio of a former practitioner of Rodin, then in Paris where she became a student of Antoine Bourdelle. Her work is marked by a contrast between the early sculptures, with their smooth appearance, and those resulting from the trauma of war, confronting us with the destruction of the world - human, animal and plant. In 1950, her highly controversial sculpture, the "Crucified Christ", was installed in the church of Plateau d'Assy. In 1956, a major retrospective was dedicated to her at the Musée National d'Art Moderne in Paris.
