Introduction and selection by Michel Granger
Known for having lived, between 1845 and 1847, in a cabin on the shores of Walden Lake, Thoreau is not, however, the "philosopher in the woods" or the "Walden hermit" that is often presented. Reading the abundant Journal (1837–1861) , as well as Walden , written when he had returned to live in the family home, shows that he was essentially a man of the village, conscious of the community in which he included himself by saying "we". On many occasions throughout his life, Thoreau placed himself as an educator, in the service of regeneration, of the elevation of thought, proof of his dedication to his fellow citizens to whom he offered new subjects for reflection. This selection aims to show a new facet of this great philosopher whose work continues to influence contemporary thought.
