A distinguished historian of medieval Islam, Gaston Wiet (1887-1971) was also a prominent figure in the French scientific presence in Egypt. A perfect Arabist, he was interested in many aspects of Egyptian history and culture. His work as head of the Arab Museum in Cairo (now the Museum of Islamic Art) between 1926 and 1951 was decisive in the enrichment, publication, and dissemination of its collections, and led him to become one of the leading experts on Islamic art from the first half of the 20th century . Furthermore, his membership in the Committee for the Conservation of Monuments of Arab Art further strengthened his interest in Islamic architecture. This book, co-published with the Louvre Museum, with the support of the Museum of Islamic Art in Cairo, focuses on Gaston Wiet's decisive contribution to the study of Islamic art by addressing, in addition to his career and personality, his work with the Arab Museum and the Committee, as well as the extent of his curiosity, from Persian art and textiles to the productions of modern Egypt, while highlighting his particular passion for epigraphy. This volume, which brings together contributions from French and Egyptian specialists, thus aims to recall, on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of his death, the essential contribution of this eminent scholar and friend of Egypt.
