The plot of Runaways is built around three characters – a private detective, then two members of an organization that we imagine to be criminal. Its pretext, in the tradition of Alfred Hitchcock's "McGuffin", is a mysterious suitcase, which keeps passing from hand to hand and whose changing contents will eventually turn out to be a trap.
Each character follows the other two while being tailed by them, but very quickly their paths cross in a more direct way. Feeling cheated, then threatened by the person they had initially trusted, they believe they can turn the situation to their advantage by allying with one of the other two to better take revenge on the third. A key part of this strategy is the report they send independently to the Organization.
Hoping to clear their names, each person creates a scenario accusing the others. In the climate of suspicion born of their mutual surveillance and manipulations that they had believed to be flawless, all misinterpret the situation in which they find themselves, to the point of provoking a fatal intervention from the Organization...
