In 2022, the Musée Marmottan Monet celebrates the 150th anniversary of Claude Monet's Impression, Sunrise , a flagship work in its collections. To mark the occasion, it is partnering with the Musée Barberini, another collector's house and owner of the "nighttime counterpart" to Impression, Sunrise : Le Port du Havre, Effet de Nuit, to organize the exhibition entitled "Facing the Sun."
Curated by art historians Marianne Mathieu, scientific director of the Musée Marmottan Monet, and Michael Philipp, chief curator at the Musée Barberini, Face au soleil aims to retrace the representation of the sun in art, from Antiquity to the present day, through a chronological and thematic journey of more than sixty works, from international private and public collections.
