The Meiji Restoration of 1868 opened Japan to cultural and commercial relations with the West. This was a time when collectors were passionate about Japan and its civilization. This edition of La Fontaine's Fables, published in 1894, is aimed at them. The five artists of La Fontaine's Fables were illustrators well known to the Japanese public: Kajita Hanko, Kanô Tomonobu, Okakura Shûsui, Kawanabe Kyôsui, daughter of the famous Kawanabe Kyôsai (1883-1889), and Eda Sadahiko. They adapted the text to Japanese reality: warriors armed from head to toe, merchants, and Shinto gods, and enjoyed depicting animals with subtlety and poetry.
