Eugène Atget (1857-1927), the famous self-taught photographer who immortalized "Old Paris" at the turn of the 20th century, needs no introduction. Yet this book approaches the man and the artist in a new light. It recounts his ties to Libourne, his hometown. It gives voice to contemporary photographers who enlighten the reader on the fascination this figure still exerts today. At the same time, the neophyte will find the essential historical references to measure the scope of his undertaking: in just over thirty years, Atget captured nearly ten thousand images in a documentary, even inventory-like approach. But his photographs also bear witness to a very particular sensitivity and poetry. This is the subject of the exhibition "Eugène Atget, Poet Photographer" at the origin of this book, organized by the Museum of Fine Arts of Libourne with the exceptional collaboration of the Carnavalet Museum - History of Paris, Paris Museums. Most of the works exhibited there are reproduced and organized around the major themes illustrating the work of Eugène Atget.
