This book seeks to fill a historical gap by focusing on the old age of the Greeks. Our sources on the subject are scattered and certainly limited, but they offer insights into personal destinies as well as the social position of a generation. Its ambition is to go beyond literary constructions of “sad old age,” to lift the elderly out of their historical weightlessness and anchor them in families and socioeconomic environments, paying attention to the gaps between genders and between individuals marked by different states. It examines the public and private activities and functions occupied by the elderly, and shows that they are social actors who do not count for nothing.
