Architectural forms and buildings inherited from the 19th century century have left their mark on the image and urban fabric of most European cities. In order to preserve their distinctive character, it seems essential to renovate and conserve this vast heritage. However, beyond the quality of the materials and construction techniques of the time, this requirement must deal with changes in lifestyles, standards and comfort criteria that make the transformation of this built ensemble delicate: renovating while respecting the original character of the buildings constitutes a real architectural challenge.
This book focuses on three European cities whose 19th century built heritage century is significant: Geneva, Lisbon and Porto. The author reconstructs their historical context and examines a large number of recent rehabilitation projects and in situ interventions, in order to carry out an exhaustive typological study of residential buildings of the period and to propose a systematic analysis of contemporary renovation strategies.
T hanks to the typological and constructive systematics presented in its pages, Renovation of a Built Heritage provides tools allowing several of the solutions presented to be applied to other contexts, with the aim of optimizing future projects as well as improving the living environment and well-being of residents.
