A comprehensive work on seals, published on the occasion of the triple exhibition "Imprints of the Past, 6,000 Years of Seals", at the Departmental Museum of Antiquities in Rouen, the Departmental Archives and the Abbey of Jumièges, this work deals with 530 illustrations of seals and their multiple uses, whether for closure or validation, from Antiquity to the present day, and particularly in Normandy, in the diocese of Rouen, from the Gallo-Roman period. This publication offers an original approach to Near Eastern, Egyptian and Gallo-Roman seals, before focusing on medieval seals and their later developments. Particular focus is placed on the seals of the Jumièges charterhouse, one of the richest in Normandy with nearly 2,000 original prints preserved, and in particular on the seals of villagers, attesting to the exceptional diffusion of the seal in Normandy.
