Collection "Hieroglyphic Paleography 8". This study, published in English in the series Hieroglyphic Paleography, offers a segment of hieroglyphic writing for a particular period: the disturbed period from the end of the Old Kingdom to the end of the First Intermediate Period. Unlike the other volumes in the series, the hieroglyphs from the Akhmim Cemetery at El-Hawawish come from a variety of sources: tomb reliefs and paintings, stelae, wooden coffins, and statues. Therefore, the length of the period and the diversity of writing surfaces and materials used sometimes favored the introduction of numerous and interesting variants into the corpus of Egyptian hieroglyphs. The Australian publication of these El-Hawawish hieroglyphs is particularly important because of the poor state of preservation of the tombs and the limited availability of printed material before the 1980s. The original documentation was carried out by student volunteers from the Universities of Auckland (New Zealand) and Macquarie University (Australia), under the inspiration and direction of Professor Naguib Kanawati. The careful transcriptions of the wooden coffins from this period are particularly noteworthy and reveal a most inventive and sophisticated script, conceived several thousand years ago. Without the dedicated work of these many modern hands, the El-Hawawish hieroglyphic corpus would have been lost forever. This volume presents a representative sample of this precious script.
