This book is a journey through the southern United States, along Route 61, a question that remains unanswered... The discovery of Mound Bayou is complemented by an investigation into the footsteps of James Baldwin, from Birmingham to Tallahassee. This long-term work on the stigmata of racism reveals dashed hopes, the many illusions of solutions, but also the muted resistance of the South to any change, a snapshot out of step with Obama's America.
The three reports produced between 2008 and 2016 were published in three episodes in Le Monde, which contrasted Édouard Caupeil's photographs with Nicolas Bourcier's texts. The full articles can be found in the book, as well as Édouard Caupeil's travel journal.
Édouard Caupeil, born in 1971, has been a freelance photographer since 1999. He works for the national and international press (Libération, Télérama, Le Monde). His portrait work and his documentary approach combine two complementary approaches to the same reflection on the human condition.
Nicolas Bourcier, born in 1968 in Stuttgart, studied history and international relations. He studied contemporary Germany and Hitler's opponents who fled the Nazi regime. A journalist for fifteen years, he works for Le Monde, International section.
