This project is justified by the recognized importance of the Sierre artist in the field of stained glass in French-speaking Switzerland from the mid-1920s to the end of the 1950s. Over more than three decades, Bille created some one hundred and fifty stained glass windows that were shared equally (eight temples or churches per denomination) by representatives of both the Reformed Church and the Catholic Church, in the cantons of Vaud, Neuchâtel and Bern for the former and Valais for the latter.
His most spectacular works can be seen at Lausanne Cathedral, Martigny Town Hall and the Royal Abbey of Saint-Maurice.
Edmond Bille (1878-1959) did not limit his work to religious spaces alone, but also created secular stained-glass windows, which he intended for both private and public use. His ease in mastering scenes with numerous characters allowed him to create compositions inspired by episodes from the Bible as well as heroic pages from his country's history.
The creation of a stained-glass window requires close collaboration between the artist who designs it and the craftsman who creates it. After experimenting with the basics of this age-old technique in his own workshop, Bille joined forces with a renowned master glassmaker, Lucerne-born Edouard Renggli, with whom he created his most important works.
This catalogue raisonné of stained glass windows is enriched with numerous sketches which allow us to better understand the genesis of the final images.
