The epigraphic expression of public and private life was most fertile in Proconsular Africa under the Roman Empire; the collection of Latin inscriptions from Dougga, ancient Thugga, is of the highest order. Since the end of 1993, a Franco-Tunisian team has undertaken to produce a new edition of the corpus of this city using the PETRAE computer system. The Bordeaux round table is a step in this program. Sixteen contributions present and comment on unpublished public texts from Dougga discovered since the 1960s, or take stock of current research on general themes directly related to the epigraphy and history of Dougga in order to enrich and update the commentary on the corpus. But the interest of these meetings is broader, because everything concerning this city, which is one of the best known in Roman Tunisia, contributes to the knowledge of ancient Africa.
