The Historical Dictionary of Heritage offers a unique synthesis of the history of the development of heritage sentiment and awareness. Devoted to around one hundred personalities, forty sites or monuments and eighty themes or institutions, the two hundred and twenty-six entries in this Dictionary, rich in numerous quotations and accompanied by bibliographical references, explore the different stages of investment in the social, political and cultural field by this process of heritage creation and constitute as many case studies illustrating the anchoring of heritage in society. While the work takes into account the close links that associate the notion of heritage with history as well as with the history of art and architecture and takes into consideration the contributions of other human sciences – anthropology, philosophy, sociology, economics, etc. – it nevertheless aims to highlight the singular path taken during its progressive emergence, nourished by the dialogue between memory and its emotional charge and history, strong in its scientific aim. The choice of the dictionary format, supplemented by a system of cross-referencing from one entry to another and by two indexes – one devoted to the people, the other to the sites and monuments mentioned – allows everyone to conduct their own reading.
