This encyclopedic work is presented in the form of a dictionary of glass artists and manufacturers, from Art Nouveau to Art Deco. Each entry in the dictionary offers the biography of a glass artist or the history of a glassworks, and exhaustively reproduces the marks and signatures used, classified by period. A selection of works, for each chapter, sheds light on the art, techniques and production of artists and glassworks.
For the first time, a work has compiled a near-exhaustive list of all the brands used in glassmaking in the period from Art Nouveau to Art Deco. From this patiently compiled inventory, some significant observations can be made: for example, the immense diversity of the signatures of Emile Gallé, who was always keen to renew the signature on his models, is a further indication of this artist's creativity.
The aim of this book is to provide a comprehensive directory of all existing signatures of master glassmakers and glass manufacturers from Art Nouveau to Art Deco. Searching is possible using dictionary entries, but also an index: thanks to a meticulous transcription of marks and signatures, the reader can immediately identify a mark and easily assimilate it to a glassmaker, a manufacturer, and a period.
With 115 artists and glassworks listed, 2,000 signatures and marks, and nearly 1,000 reproductions of works, this dictionary sheds new and original light on the history of glassmaking during this period. Philippe Olland's work tells the entire story of glassmaking, its trends, decorations, and manufacturing techniques, through the history of the manufacturers and the individual careers of the artists, during an incredibly fertile period.
