Egypt and Nubia was first published between 1842 and 1849 in three volumes of a very large format (62 x 46.5 cm). It was subsequently reprinted only three times, between 1855 and 1858, in a significantly reduced format. However, David Roberts's reputation continued to grow, and his works became collector's items. Their value is now inestimable. In 1982, Pulchri Press, a Dutch publishing house, decided to republish, in the original format, in a single volume, almost all the lithographs from volumes I and II as well as a drawing from volume III, accompanied by the original English text by William Brockedon. The book was published in 1986, with a print run of one thousand numbered copies, and was sold by subscription at a very high price. This new edition, the very first in French, reproduces the selection published by Pulchri Press in a smaller format, but which remains clearly superior to the reissues of 1855-1858. All of William Brockedon's original texts have been translated. These are the introduction on Egypt and the commentaries on each lithograph. However, to allow the 20th-century traveler to easily find their way around, the original titles of the commentaries are enhanced with subtitles that use the current names and spellings of the sites. Finally, the map of Egypt that closes this volume is the map published in the original edition. The introductory texts of this work (biography of David Roberts, David Roberts's journey to Egypt and Nubia, history of the publications of Egypt and Nubia), on the other hand, are contemporary. Likewise, the appendices, which consist of notes, a glossary, a chronology and a bibliography, aim to clarify or rectify the 19th century texts in the light of the most recent knowledge.
