This book is published as part of the exhibition On Display – Designing the shop experience , which runs from 12 October 2022 to 5 March 2023 at the Design Museum Brussels. It demonstrates a desire to integrate interior design into the analysis and understanding of developments in our society and to forge connections between design, architecture and popular culture.

An object of design and architecture, the store shapes our urban landscape and permeates popular culture. A place of exchange and interaction, it played a significant role in the dissemination of design and interior design trends during the 19th and 20th centuries . By combining small scale and ephemeral character, the store proves to be a favorable terrain for experimentation and the expression of modernity. More than just a place, retail is a social marker and a space for innovation. Reflecting the evolutions of our society and an environment favorable to their representation, the store offers a perspective on modern and contemporary aesthetics. From René Herbst (1891-1982) to Ettore Sottsass (1917-2007), or from Hans Hollein (1934-2014) to Marc Newson (˚1963), this book questions the use of design and architecture within a visual and furniture identity specific to the store.
