"I love the details, the little things that surround us. Everyday life fascinates me. In my work, I seek to discover the richness of the world," says Rinko Kawauchi. For the collection Des oiseaux, the Japanese photographer – a figure of her generation who has already published Halo and Illuminance with Éditions Xavier Barral/Atelier EXB – has focused her attention on the springtime of swallows in Japan, the season of birth. Sheltered from prying eyes, in window embrasures or in the sloping roofs, these tiny birds build nests made of earth, clay, water, and dry grass to protect their broods. With her characteristic poetry and attention to detail, Rinko Kawauchi brings out the ephemeral beauty of suspended moments: the dazzling speed of a flight, the eagerness of a feeding, the agility of postures. Small, fragile creatures made of just a few grams of feathers, swallows, thanks to their sharp wings, can perch anywhere with ease and grace.
Immersed in the light of opalescent skies, balanced on electric wires, lost among the dense foliage, the swallows take flight with dazzling wings spread, darting like lightning to feed their chicks: their life is revealed before our amazed eyes. The off-center framing, the flight paths seeming to slip off-screen, the high and low angle views, the effects of overexposed light, the visual associations, the immersion in nature, the infinitely small, the perception of textures – feathers, blades of grass, glossy beaks... – reveal the wonder of the world.
