Art history traditionally places the origin of Orientalism in 1798 with Bonaparte's Egyptian campaign (1798-1801). The purpose of this book is to focus on the beginnings of Orientalism, without going beyond the mid-1850s, to explore the birth of this movement and to better study these first artists who cast their gaze beyond Europe: from the picturesque genre scenes of Decamps to the archaeological watercolors of Edward Lear, from the landscapes of Prosper Marilhat to the conquest and discovery of Algeria by Horace Vernet, Adrien Dauzats, Eugène Fromentin, Hippolyte Bellangé, etc.
