Throughout his career, from the 1860s to his final works after 1900, Degas made the Opera the central point of his work, his "own room." He explored its various spaces - auditorium and stage, dressing rooms, foyer, dance hall, and became attached to those who inhabited them, dancers, singers, musicians, spectators, subscribers in black suits haunting the wings. This enclosed universe is a microcosm of infinite possibilities and allows for all sorts of experimentation: multiple points of view, contrasting lighting, study of movement and the truth of gesture. No work until now had considered the Opera in its entirety in Degas's work, studying at the same time the passionate link he had with this house, his musical tastes, but also the infinite resources of this marvelous "toolbox." Through the prism of the Opera, Henri Loyrette redesigns a monograph of the man who was perhaps one of the greatest artists of the 19th century. The exhibition is organized by the Musée d'Orsay and the Musée de l'Orangerie, Paris, and the National Gallery of Art, Washington, where it will be presented from March 1 to July 5, 2020, on the occasion of the 350th anniversary of the Paris Opera.
