| The Pontic colonies have long suffered from the prejudices that the Greeks imposed on them: the Black Sea, according to Herodotus, constitutes an exotic land, but above all barbaric and peripheral. If historiography has managed for more than twenty years to correct this image for the years 600-200 BC by showing the vitality of exchanges between Pontus and the Mediterranean, the 1st sca and pC still remain “dark centuries” for this region. It is to illuminate this period of transition that the contributors here endeavor to show how the different protagonists interacted, sometimes violently,: inhabitants of the cities, local populations and Roman magistrates. |
