This book traces, from a critical historical perspective, the spectacular evolution of the way in which we view and appreciate the works of self-taught creators who do not always call themselves artists. The transition from the art of madmen to art without margins reflects a century of aesthetic, sociological, and institutional upheavals, as well as fundamental questions about the limits of art, the status of the artist, and the legitimacy of a creation as a work of art.
This book focuses on the role of three emblematic protagonists in the field of asylum, raw or outsider art: Hans Prinzhorn, Jean Dubuffet and Harald Szeemann. Three major actors who have contributed to the theorization and the evolution of the perception of works too often analyzed through the spectrum of the psychological and/or social condition of their authors. Carine Fol has a doctorate in art history (Université Libre de Bruxelles) and has been artistic director of the CENTRALE for Contemporary Art in Brussels since 2012. She has worked in numerous artistic institutions in Belgium ( Botanique, Goethe-Institut, Royal Museums of Fine Arts ) and is a curator of contemporary art exhibitions that bring together works of in- and outsider art in Belgium and abroad (France, Germany, Hungary). For 10 years as director of Art en Marge , which she renamed art & marges musée , she worked for the recognition of artists identified as belonging to the margins of the official artistic field (isolated self-taught artists, people who are mentally ill or handicapped).
