Catherine Denis, born in 1954, spent her youth in a musical environment that initiated her perception of space and rhythm. In 1980, she discovered Chinese calligraphy in Taiwan and then moved to China, to the National School of Fine Arts in Hangzhou. There, she deepened her knowledge of the art of brush writing. Back in France, she shared her experience with a few disciples while developing her personal work.
A first journal, published in 2013, and kept from 2004 to 2009, gathered remarks and impressions on the work and continuous learning of this “inked presence”. In the second (2010-2017), her reflection becomes more intimate and addresses the fundamental question of the accuracy of her practice as a Westerner: “new paths of thought and creation have opened up, it is no longer a question of imitating or being inspired, but of enriching one’s thinking with art, of continuing to transform oneself.”
