In the century of Louis XIV, people were Hellenists, now they are Orientalists, thus Victor Hugo sums up the fascination that the Orient exerted on the 19th century, and particularly on its artists. In fact, the greatest European painters and sculptors undertook the great journey; the development of transport and the insatiable political interests of European states invited them to do so. The shock of this encounter with the Orient suggested to them a new artistic sensibility marked by exoticism, new colors, flamboyant lights. Whether for example Delacroix, Gérôme, Lewis, Hamdi Bey, Renoir or Kandinsky, each of these artists transposed their personal Orient into their work. Some drew on stereotypes, others, on the contrary, pursued a more realistic approach. This book offers a true overview of this multifaceted artistic phenomenon, which was built between 1798 and 1914. By bringing together some of the world's leading specialists, it highlights the diversity of Orientalism, its themes and its foundations from a resolutely contemporary perspective.
