Among a selection of eighty-six paintings and drawings (Goya, David, Gros, Gérard, Ingres, Géricault, Delacroix, Chassériau, Gérôme, Courbet...) from the exceptional collections of the Museum of Fine Arts and Archaeology of Besançon, this work offers a rich and varied journey through pictorial creation from the years 1790 to 1850. Inaugurated by David and closed by Courbet, the pages of this catalog invite us to discover a 19th century that was at once official and intimate, conventional and revolutionary. The appendix includes the first illustrated inventory devoted to all the paintings of the first half of the 19th century in the museum; comprising nearly four hundred illustrations, it has now become an indispensable tool for the study of this part of the collection.
