It is perhaps not illegitimate to situate Georg Baselitz's work between two poles: an all-too-familiar origin from which he cannot and will not escape - childhood, war, the former GDR - and a destination - the painting - constantly to be discovered, invented and reinvented. Throughout this retrospective collection of writings and interviews of unprecedented scope, the reader will thus observe the tension animating an artist who, at the cost of many ruptures, has kept the challenge of never denying either his origin or his ends.
