Cy Twombly (1928-1911) left behind a body of work of prodigious versatility, sensitivity, and originality. For a long time little known to the public, he pursued his own artistic path with unprecedented tenacity, far removed from the major trends of his time. By the time of his death, however, at the age of 83, he had achieved international renown and was recognized as one of the greatest and most original artists of the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Born in Lexington, Virginia, his journey took him—after a detour via the illustrious Black Mountain College and New York—to Europe, where he took up residence in Italy in 1957. Very early on, he developed a highly personal style of writing, made up of letters and words, evoking a painted poetry. The gods of ancient Greece, the Mediterranean light, and the history, culture, and mythology of the West find their place in the sensual poetry that constitutes his art. This book provides a first overview of Twombly's complex oeuvre; it brings together the most important paintings and painted cycles as well as a good selection of his drawings, sculptures, and photographs.
