Lucas Cranach the Elder (1472-1553) is today considered one of the most prestigious artists of the 16th century. During his long career as a court painter, he approached the powerful and contributed to their artistic and political projects. A friend of Martin Luther, he participated in the great and fundamental debates that were then agitating all of Europe, particularly those concerning images in the context of the Protestant Reformation. His numerous paintings of Adam and Eve are very representative of his production and contributed to the fame of this skillful man who, as a precursor to Rubens, knew how to surround himself with a workshop allowing him to respond to a huge number of commissions. The book published on the occasion of this retrospective allows us to rediscover his work but above all to deepen our knowledge of it by placing it in a historical context where exchanges were intense and rich.
