What is a portrait? Since when has it existed in the dimension that is most familiar to us, that is, as an image reproducing the features of an individual and especially the face? Where were these portraits preserved, painted, sculpted, drawn, or engraved? Were they easily accessible? As a political and social object, how does the portrait contribute to a better understanding of European societies at different moments in their history? How does its use evolve in the great centers of Christianity, in the suburbs, in the courts, or even in distant territories, where the racial problem has always been an important element? The portrait, one of the fundamental genres of Western art, is approached here by historians and art historians from different countries, based on different chronological and geographical realities, but without claiming to be exhaustive. Among the historians, some have chosen to focus on the genre of the written portrait. A contemporary photographer, Patrick Tosani, agreed to enrich the debate by presenting some of his works.
