A well-documented reference work, this double catalogue raisonné of the work of Corneille Theunissen (1863-1918), first second grand prix de Rome in 1888, and Paul Theunissen (1873-1931), second prix Chenavard in 1900, was carried out thanks to the discovery of a carefully preserved private collection of more than 1,500 glass plate photographs, sketches and archives. The work of the two sculptor brothers, originally from Anzin, trained at the academies of Valenciennes, then at the Beaux-Arts in Paris, suffered greatly from the two world wars. This study allows us to find more than three hundred works. Next to the Polytechnicien, today at the École Polytechnique de Palaiseau, for which Corneille Theunissen won the gold medal at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1914, there are still in place the Monument commemorating the defense of Saint-Quentin against the Spanish in 1557 in Saint-Quentin or the Monument to Charles Mathieu in Lourches, classified as a Historic Monument in 2009. The Jealous Cain, the first significant work by Paul Theunissen, could lead one to believe that there was a rivalry between the two brothers, which is far from being the case, as demonstrated by the study of life in Corneille Theunissen's studio and Paul Theunissen's activity after his brother's death.
