This book offers the first synthesis in French on the history of the Boeotian confederation in the Hellenistic period, from the destruction of Thebes by Alexander the Great (335 BC) to the Battle of Pydna and its immediate consequences in Boeotia (168-167 BC). The Boeotian confederation, one of the oldest in the Greek world, played an important role in the history of Greece during the Hellenistic period. The analysis of sources, particularly epigraphic sources, sheds new light on entire sections of the political, institutional, economic, and social history of this unique political system. The originality and relevance of the investigation also lie in the decisive contribution of new inscriptions, which are the subject of a scientific edition and in-depth commentary for the first time. Through its rigor and breadth of vision, the work hopes to nourish reflection on Boeotia, but also more broadly on ancient federalism, an original political experiment that remains an important source of inspiration in Europe. It also fits into the series of regional studies, which are a major avenue of progress in the knowledge of Greek history.

Yannis Kalliontzis, a former member of the French School of Athens, is a historian and epigraphist. Trained in Greece, Switzerland, and France, he has studied epigraphy and the history of several regions of Greece. He is currently working on a new edition of the corpus of inscriptions from Boeotia, to be published in the series Graecae Inscriptions of the Berlin Academy.
